Original Blog Post: January 20, 2009- Movin' On Up

Tonight Caedmon is being transferred from the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) to the 6th floor, which is a good thing.  It means he's in recovery and doesn't need the constant care of PICU.  His surgery was uneventful, everything went well.  They placed the shunt in a different location due to fear that there might have been a low-grade infection that wasn't picked up in the labs they did and not wanting to mess with another new shunt they opted for a different locale.  So, little Caedmon has two bald spots on his head now, across from each other, and five different incision areas, three on his head and two on his abdomen.  We are praying fervent prayers of healing over his shunt area in great hopes that this will be the end to hospital visits for many years to come.
This morning, neurosurgery actually drained his old shunt area because it continued to leak.  Again, they sent the fluid that they drained to lab to look for any infection and again there was none.  They also adjusted the flow valve on the shunt because his ventricles were so small on the CT taken this morning.  It seems he just barely needs a shunt but he does need one.  After a couple of doses of morphine last night, he's just on plain old Tylenol and was eating, talking, smiling and watching the inaugaration ceremonies just fine today.  (We try to limit his television viewing to historic events)
