Original Blog Post: October 13, 2009- Caedmon's New Toy

Caedmon had his regular physical therapy and special education check-up today.  Part of the fun was Kiirsten, the PT, bringing a stander for us to try out.  I don't know the technical name for it, she just calls it a stander so that's what we call it too.  The goal is to keep him in it a little more at a time until we reach the optimum 30 minutes twice a day time frame.  The thought today was just to put him in as long as possible without him getting upset.  We don't want him to associate it with negative feelings.  Well, he lasted an amazing 15 minutes the first time.  This afternoon we put him in again and he went 20 minutes.  It's so new right now I'm not really surprised.  We'll see in a week or so how patient he is with Mommy strapping him in.  Again, I apologize for the sideways video.  I tried a different way this time and it still didn't work to straighten it out!

The purpose, as you may guess from looking at the contraption, is to get Caedmon to use his leg muscles on a regular basis for a long period of time.  We've been doing standing exercises with him with Adam holding him up in the standing position and myself holding his feet in the right angle on the floor.  He tolerated this for the last three months but he just realized that if he goes totally limp Adam can't hold him up.  Little stinker!  So, we were very happy when Kiirsten called and said the school district had an extra stander we could try out.  This will hopefully get his brain and leg muscles working together to eventually get him standing on his own and walking.
